Flashcards work for the exam.
The brain forgets within weeks.

Hermann Ebbinghaus mapped the forgetting curve in 1885. Without reinforcement, humans forget roughly 90% of newly learned information within a week. Flashcard apps have known this for decades — which is why the good ones use spaced repetition to push the card back before you forget.

But spaced repetition solves the wrong problem.

The issue is not when you see the word again. It's how you see it. A flashcard showing “ameliorate” → “to make something bad better” is always the same encounter. Same visual context. Same definition. Same retrieval depth. The brain's memory system doesn't deepen under these conditions — it simply refreshes a shallow trace.
